Sitemap limits: 50,000 URLs and 50 MB

LimitValue
URLs per sitemap50,000
File size50 MB (52,428,800 bytes) uncompressed
Sitemaps per index50,000
URL length2,048 characters
Sitemaps submittable per Search Console property500 index files

Gzip (sitemap.xml.gz) saves bandwidth, but the 50 MB limit applies to the uncompressed size. If you exceed a limit, Google may reject the whole file, so split into several sitemaps under a sitemap index. Many large sites keep each file at 10,000 to 25,000 URLs so it regenerates quickly and errors are easier to trace.
